The idea behind the Clean Water Act of 1972 was simple: Every American should live in a country where our water is safe for fishing, swimming and other uses, and free from harmful chemicals and pollutants.
Friday was the 30th anniversary of this landmark legislation that set an environmental standard for our country that should never be lowered.
Since 1972, we have increased the number of waters that are safe for fishing and swimming, and slowed the rate of wetlands loss by 75 percent. The Great Lakes and the Long Island Sound are cleaner and support more than 113,000 jobs in New York's fishing industries. One of the greatest success stories is the Hudson River.
